Sometimes, you can improve on a classic.
This week, Joe Colucci from Munyon’s Paw-Paw Liqueur joined the podcast to talk about his Florida-made papaya liqueur — and the fascinating Florida history behind it. Listen to the podcast (embedded below but you can also get it here).
Before the podcast, Rick and I prepared by… asking his wife to make a drink incorporating the papaya liqueur. (Podcasting is hard work, y’all, and trust me when I tell you every week doesn’t involve inventing new drinks.)
When I stopped by Rick’s house, Julie had the blender at the ready. The RumRunner, a Florida Keys invention (you’re welcome, America), isn’t for lightweights. The rum and liqueur is a deceptively light-tasting, sweet combo. But, in moderation, it’s a delicous treat.
Even more so when Julie added the Munyon’s. Here’s the recipe:
Munyon’s Paw Paw Rum Runner, Kilby-Style
- 1 1/2 ounces dark rum
- 1 ounce banana liqueur
- 1 ounce Munyon’s Paw-Paw liqueur
- 1 ounce pineapple juice
- 1 ounce freshly squeezed lime juice
- 1/2 ounce grenadine
Cocktail cherry and pineapple wedge, for garnish (optional, but go for it — be fancy)

Rick also made an old-fashioned with the liqueur. He used dark rum instead of bourbon. All I know is I want that glass. Both those too sweet for your tastes? Check out my recipe for sour orange margaritas.
