Almost 45 years ago, Douglas Adams and Mark Carwadine published Adams’ least science-fiction book ever, Last Chance To See. The duo had traveled the world, seeking out disappearing animals such as the kakapo, Komodo dragon, and other creatures.
I highly suggest checking out the book or the series (available on Prime); Last Chance To See has an engaging tone and the duo taught a young writer (me) a lot about how I wanted to describe the natural world. (Incidentally, one of my favorite quotes about humanity comes from Last Chance To See: “Human beings, who are almost unique in having the ability to learn from the experience of others, are also remarkable for their apparent disinclination to do so.”)
That’s why my next book will pay tribute to this book. Think “Last Chance To See, but make it Florida” and you have the idea.
The book is a long way from done; I’m still hashing out which animals and plants will get included. One thing’s certain, though: no charismatic megafauna. Loosely translated, that means no, I’m not writing about the Florida Key deer, panther, or manatee. Don’t get me wrong; these animals need our help. But they’re all super-cute and cuddly (er, well, not really — please do not cuddle any of these animals) and they’re all super-visible. People know the Florida panther needs help. Carlton Ward’s on it, I swear.
But have you ever thought about what the world would be like without the Stock Island tree snail?
That’s where my book — still untitled — comes into play.
I’m starting with on of my favorite trees: Torreya taxifolia, a tree that enchanted me more than 15 years ago. I spent a day this week cavorting with a few of those trees, and I can’t wait to tell you about it. (If you know me, you know I have a tree and plant obsession.)
Do you know of an endangered Florida plant or animal that should be on the list? Email me and suggest one, and if it’s not already on my list and it gets included, I’ll give you a signed copy of the book when it publishes.
